A skin cancer exam is a procedure that checks the body for signs of skin cancer. It is not used to diagnose cancer. If skin cancer is suspected after a screening, a test called a biopsy will be needed to find out whether you have cancer.
The exam checks the skin for moles, birthmarks or other marks that are unusual in color, size, shape, or texture. If these unusual traits are found, it may be a sign of potential skin cancer.
Basal cell and squamous cell cancers are the most common form of cancers. These cancers rarely spread to other parts of the body and are usually curable with treatment.
There is a third type of skin cancer called Melanoma. Although less common, Melanoma is more dangerous because it’s more likely to spread.
Skin exams are essential because they help spot skin cancer when it is easiest to treat– in the early stages.

You will wear a gown and the dermatologist will give you a head-to-toe exam. The dermatologist may use a magnifying glass to closely examine certain areas. The exam will take about 10-15 minutes. Do not wear makeup or nail polish to the exam.
If we determine that a mole or other mark on your skin looks like it might be a sign of cancer, we will order a biopsy, to make the final diagnosis. This procedure removes a small sample of skin which is then examined under a microscope to check for cancerous cells. If you are diagnosed with skin cancer, you should begin treatment as soon as possible.
Skin exams are critical to find and treat cancer early which may help to prevent the disease from spreading.
